The Malaysia SDG Cities is a national initiative that unleashes the potential of cities in Malaysia to accelerate sustainable development and implement the New Urban Agenda. It recognizes that cities and communities are crucial in determining its own set of priorities and decides on the means of implementation to ensure that the SDG Goals and targets are met.
The framework is set to encourage a bottom up approach in developing local action plans that will accelerate the SDGs achievements for Malaysia where the 17 SDGs and its 169 targets of the 2030 Sustainable Agenda must be achieved. Localizing the global goals at cities and urban areas is important for an urban nation like Malaysia and the Malaysia SDG Cities will ensure that vertical integration between national and state policies at all levels are aligned to the SDGs by realizing the aspirations and ensuring of its effective implementation locally.
The SDG Cities Network is a network of local authorities, organizations and communities that are working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Network aims to bring together local organisations in cities :
- To promote sectoral knowledge exchange to advance the SDGs;
- To make connections between organizations working on the SDGs;
- To encourage organisations to collaborate and build partnerships on common SDGs targets;
- To share and increase public awareness of the work currently being done by local governments and local organizations in cities that will advance the SDGs; and
- To engage and encourage more local organizations to deliver and support the localisation of the SDGs in cities.
